One of the 25 Best Outdoor iPhone Apps

How much of an outdoor geek are you? The test is whether you think this app rocks. I do, so capital G for me. What is it? It’s a copy of the 1917 guidebook by outdoorsman A. Hyatt Verrill, which outlines 154 knots, splices, and tangled messes of cord. It’s filled with old school writing and illustrations that never go out of style, and the content is every bit as valuable today as the guidance in “Freedom of the Hills”. Knots of fun

This is a great historical text full of useful info, like how to calculate how much weight a rope will hold, as well as the instructional aspect of making knots. I love it.

Beautiful!

Beautiful UI. Easy to follow instructions. The only suggestion is to have an overview of all the knots. Other than that freakin sweet! Worth $.99

This is an exellent resource. I am a working merchant seaman and while I have used most of the knotwork presented here, I only use a few on a daily basis. Making a Matthew Walker or a shroud knot from memory after a year or two can be tricky, and lugging around a copy of "Ashleys" whenever I ship out is impractical. While this may not be an ideal app for a mountian climber, it is perfect for any mariner. The instructions are easy to follow, and there were even a few knots that I didnt know. More than worth the price.

Beautiful to Behold

Im not a mariner and cant see myself using half of this information; still worth the $.99 for the aesthetics alone.

Helpful!

Im not a mariner, nor am I a boyscout, but regardless, you never know when you need a good knot, and this ebook shows you how to do it in an aesthetically pleasing way!

Useful app

I work offshore as an officer on cargo ships and used this app several times, particularly the splicing section. The long splice explanation is worth the price by itself.

No

It doesnt even have a bowline

Tankerman /mariner

This product is very powerful tool to any individual in the maritime industry. This is a must have app for the money.

Is there more?

This is the most useful app. I have seen that covers ropes and there uses. I dont have to go upstairs and pick through multible books/ manules just to find the right way to wip the end of a rope or shortn it. Thanks big time. Though I did notice that unlike my books up stairs, that there is no mention on how to coil rope, make a monkey fist, Ect...

Does not work with OS 3.0

It was a nice reading until OS upgrade to ver.3.0. Now all I see is blank screen.

A Novelty

Keep in mind this is a novelty, like buying a toy gun at Gettysburg. This is not a serious reference for the sailor, climber, etc. No bowline. Some useful knots but I would look for a more useful app.

This app is broke....

It seems that the 3.0 software update for the iphone has made this app not start. I did a dull reset and still the app starts with a tan background then goes to black.

Now they tell me

Purchased and downloaded Knots app only to find out it wont run on 3.0 firmware....after purchasing and checking their support website, they say Apple has had the update but so far hasnt approved the updated app. So, the rest of sit and wait while the wheels slowly turn. Seems they could say on the site it wont run...so dont buy it if you have 3.0 or a new 3GS...The app starts and then turns black...nice way to run things.

Beware!

Not compatible with 3.0! Get blank screen. Wait for update.

Hate it

Three reasons why not to buy: (1) Not all needed knots are shown. (2) Nothin more than pictures and aweful explainations. (3) Doesnt even work anymore on iPhone 4

a good looking app book

This is a book. If you are looking for an app to use as a quick reference or learning tool, there are better knot apps available. That said, the book is a great vintage work, very handsome and stylish.

v 1.4, Knots, Splices, and Rope Work

As an admitted knot nut (Ive probably collected 10 or more knot books in my life), I like the historical value of this app, but it isnt practical: This is an iPhone version of an old, interesting knot book. BUT, the text cannot be used to learn the value of the knots. The author of the book starts talking about the Reef Knot (Square Knot) as being strong and reliable, and a page or two later has a clear drawing of the knot in the "upset" shape, which happens frequently. He says that it shouldnt be used for ropes of different diameter, but the picture of knot failure clearly shows two idential ropes. Other authors, even Ashleys old tome from 1949, warn not to use the Reef Knot for personal safety, because its not stable in use. (bummer for the Boy Scouts). As a cool old book, it rates 3 stars, but as a knot book its a 1 star. Hence, 2 stars. Sorry.

Knots not for the iPad

This app does not work on my iPad. Waste of money.

Good App but too old now

This app was great until 4.0 update now it crashes and I get nothing but a black screen. How about you give us a reason to not be ticked off
